When irony was an antidote (sort of)

'Irony poisoning' is a term I've seen getting tossed around a good bit lately. This tends to refer to people (typically zoomers) online who are on numerous layers of irony and allow said irony to make a significant effect on how they socialize with others, things like (but certainly not limited to) sending fast paced yet 'ironically' formulaic memes and nonchalantly molesting the english vernacular and warping it into corny code words that constantly change, whether it be to evade social media censorship or to be 'ironic' yet again, it all ends up being stale garbage that blends together.

The internet as a whole used to be better at irony not so long ago. For instance, there are age old conversations that will come up about 'cringe culture' or anything deemed strange or undesirable for that matter. A common refutation against cringe culture is that said culture is allegedly attacking on popular media enjoyed by many people who are just having harmless fun. It is a fairly innocent take but not really a smart one. The devil is in the details when you realize this is on par with the infamous "Let people enjoy things" argument, the argument that is known for defending vices more than it is for actually liberating people. Irony in meme culture (when used properly) can actually be weaponized to mitigate if not outright destroy psyops that try to gaslight society into thinking that its okay to like something that just a decade ago we would've nearly unanimously cringed at. Depending on what that something is, we can debate all day about whether it deserved being deemed cringe or if we were just being NPCs that didnt understand. This slippery slope combined with how huge the internet is nowadays have allowed people to evolve and devolve in all sorts of directions, making it increasingly more difficult to understand one another, and it just so happens we've been backstabbed by irony to make this complexity a greater reality than ever before.

I'll be one of the first to tell you that not just irony poisioning, but ironic detachment specifically is one of the worst things you can do to yourself. While so far I seem mostly in favor of irony, I acknowledge that the people talking about irony poisoning are right about many things. Make no mistake, irony poisoning can seamlessly turn you into either a complete loser with next to no real personality traits of your own other than whats been spoonfed to you by some questionable monoculture or echochamber (oh the irony that you tried to avoid that fate with irony only to end up being what you tried so hard to avoid being), or at best you become blackpilled beyond belief when you become so ironically detached that you genuinely start to believe everything you could possibly do in life has a high chance of just being yet another meme waiting to be fallen for. This is an incredibly pessimistic view of life where the cons obviously outweighs the pros.

So how the heck can irony be both an antidote and a poison? Simple, it depends on the irony. There are many different ways you can use irony that if I discussed all of them here, we would be here forever. The important thing is to use irony wisely, and if you cant, just dont use it. Without irony you're pretty much forced to be your true authentic self. No obfuscation, no proprietary magic, no tricks, just you. There is a beauty in that. I think if you're going to utilize irony, one important takeaway is to NEVER let irony overwrite who you are under the mask. You can use irony, but don't let irony use you.
